Hurricane Irma soaked northern Palm Beach County in September 2017. Less than four weeks later, about 6.5 inches fell on Jupiter Farms, 5.5 of it in two and a half hours. Streets around Jupiter Farms Road flooded worse than at any time since Frances and Jeanne in 2004. The district manager told CBS12 that in events like that, the roads act as drainage.
Fill Dirt and Nowhere to Drain
A lot of Farms owners have raised their homesites with fill over the years. That leaves less low ground to hold stormwater and sends more of it toward the neighbors. A house that ends up lower than the lots around it takes their runoff against its slab.
King Tides on the Loxahatchee
The year's highest tides arrive between September and December and peak in October and November, according to the Village of Tequesta. They can flood low streets with no rain at all. For waterfront homes along the river and the Intracoastal, a king tide on top of a heavy rain can push groundwater up under the slab just when the yard is already soaked.
