What causes mold in Vero Beach homes?
Mold in Vero Beach homes usually traces back to water that got into a wall or slab and stayed there: groundwater under mainland homes built on drained land, storm-driven rain through the walls on the barrier island or a leak inside the house. The canals dug in the 1910s still control the water table across much of the mainland. A district that began as the Indian River Farms Drainage District in 1919 runs them today. Through the wet season, roughly May 26 to October 19 in Vero Beach by National Weather Service medians, groundwater sits close under homes off 43rd Avenue, 58th Avenue and Oslo Road. It presses on the joint where the slab meets the block.
Nicole Came Ashore at Vero
Hurricane Nicole made landfall at Vero Beach in the early hours of November 10, 2022, according to the National Hurricane Center, weeks after the rainy season had ended. Waves close to 19 feet offshore and an above-normal tide cut into the dunes and wrecked the boardwalks at Humiston and Jaycee beaches. Oceanfront homes along Ocean Drive and A1A took the wind and rain head-on.
Stucco From the 1920s
Builders put up Old Riomar between 1919 and 1940. McAnsh Park and Osceola Park date from the same stretch, much of it Mediterranean Revival with white stucco walls. Stucco that old carries decades of patched cracks, each one a path for rain into the wall. Water that gets behind old plaster can feed mold for a long time before anything shows.
